367. Creels close up

So much for ending the blog - I'm so used to going out for walks with my camera that I just can't help myself!

Yesterday morning I had a closer look at this big pile of smart new creels by the harbour's edge and I noticed that the buffers (there's probably a technical term for this) are made of recycled tyres.

So I had a look at an older creel to compare, and saw that the equivalent part was made of rope.  I wonder which will be more hardwearing after hundreds of hours down on the sea bed..

366. Leap year bonus!

It's a beautiful morning here today so I nipped out to take some piccies of the harbour.  Here's a bumper crop for the final post :)

361. Evening rainbow

Yesterday was a day of intermittent heavy rain and bright sunny spells which resulted in this beautiful rainbow.  These were taken at around 6:30 yesterday evening.

360. The harbour at low tide

It's rainy and miserable today, so these are photos I took a couple of weeks ago in the sunshine.
I never cease to be amazed at the volume of water that is moved each time the tide comes in and goes out. 

359. West Street

This is West Street which, somewhat bizarrely, is a continuation of South Street (in a straight line).

If you fancy a move to the village, the first properties on both the left (modern bungalow with the sea just over the low garden wall) and right (traditional cottage with large garden at the rear) of this photo are currently on the market at £205,000 each.

358. Permanent Graffiti

On the edge of the slipway there's are initials carved into the stone - must have taken ages!

357. Rope ladder

This rope ladder has appeared recently.
I don't know if it's going to be a permanent feature!

356. Rainbow

This fabulous rainbow was snapped by Jane Henderson and was taken from her house.  I love this photo, not just for the rainbow but because it shows a very familiar part of the village, the Hardgate, from a very unfamiliar angle.

The white house is the Seaforth Guest House.

I guess you take the views from your own house for granted, but to other people they can be really quite interesting!  Thanks Jane :)

355. Coffee & A Band

As I've mentioned previously, a coffee morning is now held every Thursday morning in the Church Hall.  There is always some entertainment provided, and today it was Standby, a band of three 14 year olds from the village - Laura on vocals & guitar, Eilidh on bass and Liam on drums.  They've been playing together since they were in Primary 6 and are really, really good (and I'm not just saying that because Eilidh is my daughter)!!

They won the under 14s category at 'Has the Mearns Got Talent?' a couple of years ago, and are regular performers at the Johnshaven Fish Festival.  Apologies for the slightly blurry photo below.

354. Hidden wall

I never knew this wall existed until very recently.  You can only see it if you stand on the very top of the harbour wall and look down to the seaward side.  It must be there to serve a purpose - it creates a pool - does anyone know why it was built?

353. Awesome gate!

Alison's quirky and unusual garden beside the sea has already featured in the blog as it's filled with all kinds of interesting bits and pieces - some found, some grown and some painted.

This equally colourful gate can be seen to the rear of her house.

Sorry but the blog will now be taking a break whilst I disappear to recharge my batteries on a family holiday :)  

352. The Kraken

There was widespread panic in Johnshaven this morning when the Kraken was spotted a short distance offshore.  Fishermen, who were collecting creels in calm seas, experienced a sudden enormous swell in the water and rushed back to the safety of the harbour.

When the boats were out of its reach the Kraken let out an almighty roar which shook the old buildings so much that many people thought a minor earthquake had hit the village.  There are a few slates off in Harbour Place but thankfully no-one was injured.

The Community Council have called everyone to the Village Hall for an emergency meeting.  All residents will have their hands inspected and anyone showing signs of the Black Spot will be immediately banished to Gourdon.
