406. Yes/ No

Please note, this is NOT a political post, it is a record of events!!

Today the Yes campaign came to the village.  Whatever my/ your opinion of the forthcoming referendum on Scottish independence, as a record of life in Johnshaven, I think this is worthy of inclusion in the blog.

If I see the No campaigners I'll be sure to take a pic of them too.

405. Above The Narrows

This morning I went for a walk beyond the Narrows and then did a bit of scrambling to get up to the old railway bridge.

404. Landslides

These photos show the damage that was done to the area around The Narrows in the heavy rain before Christmas 2012.  It's hard to see because of the shadow, but an awful lot of hillside was swept away and settled very close to the back of the house.

The photo below shows where earth slid down the slope from the old railway line to the field between the village and The Narrows.

403. The Old Mill

The future of this building and the site on which it stands is uncertain.  

When walking past it this morning I thought I should take a few photos to record it for posterity.

402. Firewood

Leon's wood pile at the harbour includes a number of chopped up bits of a blue boat, but the prow seems to have escaped the axe! 

401. Storm damage & debris

Yesterday it never got properly light outside.  It felt like dusk at around 1:30pm and we were well and truly battered by wind and rain all day.  Last night this continued and combined with a high tide to produce massive waves which have caused a lot of damage to the roads.

I only had time to get along to the harbour area before opening up the shop this morning, but I heard that it's a terrible mess in the other direction too.  Several residents were clearing boulders from outside their houses along Fore Street for well over 2 hours this morning, and Alison's much admired quirky garden has been completely destroyed.

At least the seagulls are loving it as there are dead crabs all over the place!

 Great chunks of tarmac have been lifted up and smashed.

This is the usually stone-free grassy area beyond the harbour where the kiddies' rides are at the Fish Festival.

Look at the size of the big piece of tarmac under the pile of debris here!

400. Snow (at last!)

During the entire year that I was doing this blog on a daily basis we had NO snow at all, and I was really disappointed not to be able to include any snowy photos.  

At long last, on post no.400, here it is!  This morning it was snowing really heavily, but now the sun's out and everything's sparkly and white.  Beautiful.
